“The Nut” – Stanley Tasmania

The Nut

Last weekend when the weather was fine and sunny (yes you do have to pick your days down here), we headed of to the North-west coast to explore the sea-side town of Stanley.

After getting up bright and early and braving the 6 degree temperature we headed of towards the coast and the port town of Stanley. They call it ‘the nut’ because of the rock that supposedly looks like a nut. We explored the beaches, went for a stroll along the docks and wandered around the town for the morning before having a seafood lunch on the waterfront. A fairly large fleet of fishing and lobster boats work from Stanley, so the seafood was pretty good to say the least. (Bessy had to stay in the car)

After lunch we drove up to the Highfield Historic Site  which was built from 1832 to 1835 for the chief agent of the Van Diemen’s Company. The view across to Stanley was pretty awesome from up there, but the wind was cold. It certainly is a wild and rugged coast up in the north-west. In the one day it went from hot and sunny to overcast and cold about three times.

Some interesting signs along the way, but we did not see any penguins.

We don’t have anything planned for over Easter, but if it fines up might go for a drive to Mole creek and check out the caves and wildlife park – Peter is keen to pat a Tassie Devil – think he will need to check he has all his fingers afterwards! No need to buy any chocolate Bunnies for Easter, little bunnies running around everywhere here. The wee wascally wabbits drive Bessy crazy.

I have had a request for more pics of the pouch – so just for you Kerry, here are a few of Bessy who it would appear does not like the cold.

    • Pity it was not like that all the time – I don’t think I have ever seen the weather change so much and so quickly as down here in Tassie!

  1. Thank you for sharing your incredible travels.. We do have such a beautiful country to see and explore.. Love the photos as well. Continued safe travels. You never know, we may bump into each other along the road… We have a beautiful 22ft crusader caravan.

    • Hopefully some more good pics from Tassie if we don’t freeze to death – I can see a bit of reading in the future over the winter – to cold to go outside!
