Lawn Hill National Park – way outback Queensland

Well we are back in Mt Isa after traveling

Never smile at a crocodile

to Lawn Hill National Park. It definitely was a bit of the beaten track – hell who am I kidding, it was a bloody long way off the beaten track. We thought the dirt road was never going to end. All up we drove over about 600kms of dirt road, and some of it not very friendly. We are back in Mt Isa because we got two flat tires coming out – within half an hour!!! We could not believe it. Both of us were absolutely covered in red dirt, but I must say Peter kept his cool (figuratively speaking) very well. But I think it was worth the effort, and the expense, it really is a spectacular place once you get there.

The camp ground was a virtual oasis in the middle of nowhere. The water ways in the gorge were magnificent. We did about 4 ½ hours of bush walking around the gorge and spent many hours swimming. The crocks are only little fresh water ones so they don’t bother anyone. I will put in a few pics with the blog but will add another lot of photos with just pics from Lawn Hill – I took so many!!

We will be making a bee line to Mataranka from here and there will not be much service along the way, so the next post  will likely be from Bitter Springs at Mataranka. Ahaaaa – nice hot springs to wash of more of the red dust.

  3. Hey U2. Yes it is good to see no black eyes or broken bones – but it is early days yet. Gr8 happy snaps. Mataranka Hot Springs was the camp spot after 3 days travelling through Arnhem Land from Gove before they put the ” highway” in and was always hard to leave!! Good tip: arrive before dark so you can see where to set up camp because that nice flat ground without anyone else camping there may just be the airstrip!
    Enjoy – the Territory’s gr8,m8
