KALGOORLIE
This is our last day in Kalgoorlie. We have been staying at a free RV park about 3 mins out of the main city area. It has been quite busy with lots of people coming and going – apparently the caravans parks are full – that should be fun for us heading towards Perth with Easter on the way. Maybe a slow trip with stops at free camps.
Kalgoorlie is larger than I thought it would be, not really sure what I expected. Home of the Golden Mile, reputed to be the richest gold field in Australia was “discovered” by an Irishman named Patrick Hannan. His name can been seen on numerous buildings, streets, centres and parks around the city

The amount of gold taken out of the ground is staggering – reported to be 40,030,343 ounces of gold since discovery in 1893. The price of gold on the world market today is $2677.31 AU – do the math!!
The Fimiston Open Pit better known as the Super Pit is 3.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and more than 600 metres deep. The mine employs around 1000 people in Kalgoorlie and is visible from just about everywhere in Kalgoorlie and Boulder

Buildings of Kalgoorlie

There are lots of nice green spaces and parks amongst the red dirt

A visit to the Goldfields Museum that has a memorial to all the miners killed on the “Golden Mile”. The wall has two parts and names on both sides dating back to 1889
