Coober Pedy (Kupa-piti) – White man’s hole

So we left Alice Springs on Thursday – Heave away, Haul away, Bound for South Australia.

Our first stop in SA was Coober Pedy. Driving into the area was like entering a giant sand pit. There were literally holes everywhere, I don’t think there is a square inch of the town that has not been dug up at least once. The signs posted everywhere are evidence of this.

We spent six days in Coober Pedy – yes six – looked at some underground mines, went “noodling” as digging for opals is called and spent some time getting used to our new family member. 90 percent of the world’s Opal come from this region, but only about one-quarter of the mines are currently looking for Opal, everyone else is mineral mining as there is more money in it. I can see why, we certainly did not make our fortune, but did find some nice little stones that can be made into earrings or such.

We left Coober Pedy today (Wednesday) heading south. After passing through the Great Eastern Desert and Lark Hart we have stooped at Woomera for the night. No need for power – everything glows in the dark! Will have a look around tomorrow and then be on our way towards the Adelaide Hills and all those wonderful wineries and cooler weather.
