Kakadu – the heritage listed wetlands 180km east of Darwin. The park is renowned for its wetlands and water ways, gorges and Aboriginal rock-art.
We spent three days in Kakadu (I am sure you could spend much more time there), and thoroughly enjoyed it. We did not stick to the bitumen and went down lots of dirt and visited as much as we could in the time we were there.
The first day we arrived they had a series of storms come through (the first for the season), so were lucky to gets some pics of the storm over the wetlands and at Ubirr lookout.
Mudginberri Billabong and Ubirr
It was much cooler the next day after the rain and we set out early in the morning to Nanguluwur and Anbangbang Billabong to see the rock-art and wetlands. I even managed to climb to the top of the lookout despite my fear of heights.
We visited heaps of sites and took loads of pics – but I won’t bore you with all of them. Some of the sunset ones are a little dodgey as I only use a pocket camera or the phone, so low light is a bit of an issue.
Bucket Billabong
Red Lilly and Alligator Billabong
And yes – lots more crocodile warning signs
We stayed at a resort in Kakadu – a bit of a luxury for us white trailer trash, and after returning to Darwin to watch the Footy Finals, we set of for Ayers Rock via Alice Springs. Heading south to beat the heat – a bit of a joke really as it was over 40 degrees in the shade yesterday. We picked up a German bike rider (well he really picked us up) at Adelaide River just outside Darwin and gave him and his bike a lift to Alice. Poor little guy would have roasted in the heat. It is cooler at night down here but still really hot during the day. Will be spending a couple of days in Alice and then on to Ayers Rock via McDonnell ranges. From the rock it will be down to SA and Adelaide, and hopefully cooler weather until Xmas. Stopped at Devil’s Marbles on the way here and will include those pics with the Ayers Rock trip.
Before closing I would just like to say – I wanted to head South right from the start – but no Peter just had to turn right at the Three Ways and take us into the heat, and guess who is doing the most whingeing about the temp – not me!!!!!
