Greetings from the Isa

In Mount Isa for a few days at present. Staying in a real caravan park, with proper showers and even grass. We have not seen much grass recently – only dust, dust and more dust. It’s nice to not have to kick over the generator in the morning to make coffee, with the added bonus you can have coffee early if you want without waking everyone else up!

Stayed at the deserted town of Mary Kathleen on the way here. It was a bit weird camped up on the main road in the center of town. All the building have been removed but the roads and building slabs are still there. Even the tennis courts and swimming pool sites are still visible. We drove out to the mine site – I think you are supposed to walk the last 2km to site, but the gate was open so we drove the entire way in. It was quite spectacular with the afternoon sun, the photos do not do it justice. We encountered a herd of camels of the way there. It is the first time I have ever seen camels in the wild.

While in Mt Isa we will be visiting the local museums and also talking a tour of the underground mine.

From Mt Isa we will be heading to Boodjamulla National Park (Lawn Hill and Adels Grove). It is supposed to be a beautiful spot. The gorge and waterways are feed from a natural spring and the area was once a Botanical Garden. We will also be visiting the Riversleigh Fossil deposits on the way through. It is about t 150km west of Mt Isa (all dirt road), and I should imagine there will be not mobile service.

We will take lots of pics and update the site again we we are back on the road heading towards Alice Springs and eventually Darwin. It has been a bit cooler the last couple of days – I think it is wishful thinking to hope that it will remain that way until we reach Darwin.
